President of Republic’s Participation in COP26 Conference: A strong presence of Mauritania at the international level to solve Environmental Problems
The Participation of the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) reflects Mauritania’s keenness to contribute to solving international environmental problems.
In his speech at the conference, the president of the Republic stressed the great importance our country attaches to environmental protection by adopting a national and global framework that relies on environmentally-friendly resilient development projects. In this regard, the president highlighted the multi-faceted dire consequences of global warming, constituting an existential threat on humanity that must be addressed.
The president of the republic pointed out that Mauritania plans to reduce gas emissions by 11 percent below 2018 levels by 2030, declaring that with external financial support, carbon neutrality can be achieved by 2030.
He added, in this regard, that the efforts made by our country during the period of 2015-2021 led to an increase in the share of renewable energies in the energy mix from 18% in 2015 to 34% in 2020 and that the country endeavors to reach a rate of 50% in 2030.
His Excellency the President of the Republic indicated that our country will provide the world with an alternative and sustainable source of clean energy by launching a new program to develop green hydrogen, calling on financial institutions and interested companies to support them in this project.
He urged the international community to make the Great Green Wall program an international priority, calling for an increase in funds directed to environmental adaptation and to be given in the form of donations, so as not to increase the debt burden of developing countries.
At the end of his speech, the president of the republic emphasized that Mauritania is convinced that climate action has become a social, economic, and existential priority, therefore, Mauritania will remain fully committed to strengthening international cooperation in the field of climate and accelerating environmental transformation that is more necessary now than ever.
