ECONOMY

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania was able to enter the twenty-first century with hope and optimism because of the comprehensive reform program that has begun to be implemented, and because of the promising prospects for exploiting the underground resources, especially oil and gas.

The Mauritanian economic structure is currently based on several sectors, including mining, industrial fishing, trade, agriculture, and development.

Indeed, for a long time, the exploitation of iron from the mines of the Zouerate region, in addition to copper, gold, Akjoujt, and Andramcha gypsum, constituted the main components for export.

At the beginning of the eighties, fisheries began to be exploited, whose importance was increasing, and it has now become the number one wealth in the country.

As for the agricultural and pastoral sector, which represents 20% of the gross domestic product, it is a pillar of the national economy as it is no less important than other pillars.
