Livestock

Mauritania has abundant and diverse animal wealth, and vast pastoral areas throughout the national soil, which enabled livestock to cover most of the country’s needs (meat, dairy, leather, and other animal derivatives), and Mauritania exports – even in a raw form – multiple animal products to neighboring countries.

Livestock in the country is estimated at more than 29.5 million heads, distributed as follows:

2 million head of camels.

2.5 million head of cows.

25 million head of small ruminants (goats and sheep).

This wealth is constantly increasing at a rate of more than 3.5 percent annually

In appreciation of the enormous national capabilities of this wealth, a national exhibition of livestock was organized in its first edition in the city of Tembedgha, on March 31, 2021, and on April 14, the Council of Ministers approved the establishment of a fund to promote livestock development, and in May of the same year a Ministry of Veterinary special.
