Participation in a meeting with the African Union Mission in Washington.

At the invitation of the African Union Mission in Washington, H.E. Cisse Cheikh BOIDE, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to the United States of America in her position as Chair of the Humanitarian Affairs and Sustainable Development Committee, participated on May 03, 2022, in a morning meeting at the headquarters of the African Union Mission in Washington. The meeting discussed the topic of Climate change and the impact of COVID-19 on Africa.

During her intervention, the Ambassador answered a couple of questions regarding the importance of responding to climate change for Africa, the impact of COVID-19 on sustainable development across the continent, and how to build back better and diversify our economies to be resilient.

Her Excellency Cisse Cheikh BOIDE has indicated that the African continent will be severely affected by climate change as Africans have contributed the least to this problem, and how the continent will respond and adapt to climate change will be crucial in saving lives and livelihoods, and protecting our natural resources through careful planning, as we can avoiding the worst climate impacts and making our societies more resilient to climate impacts. Her Excellency emphasized that the countries of the continent, after the Covid 19 pandemic, will pay great attention to preserving their natural resources, and investing in diverse companies that help create job opportunities, sustainable development and preserve the environment. Additionally, Her Excellency has mentioned that investment in tourism was not enough to support environmental conservation, and certainly not a path to resilience, as there are many other investments, and they should be explored for example: payments for ecosystem services or carbon, genetic resources, natural products, sustainable agriculture, and clean energy.
