The Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs calls for more efforts to mitigate the effects of the Ukrainian war and the repercussions of Covid-19 on poor countries and fragile economies

On Monday 26th 2022, H.E. the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, during his presentation of our country’s speech to the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, has called for redoubling efforts to face the challenges related to the effects of the war in Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic, and to try to mitigate these effects on poor countries and fragile economies.

The Minister considered that the measures taken in this field by the international community are still below the required level, so we are all called upon today, to redouble efforts to find solutions that ensure security, peace, and a decent life for all the peoples of the world.

The Minister called on the international community assume its responsibilities towards developing and poor countries and to help them quickly face the challenges that threaten their food security and contain the damage caused by them. In this context, we renew our call for the cancellation of the external indebtedness of the countries of the African continent, the Minister said.

The Minister also highlighted the important milestones made by our country under the leadership of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, through the  promotion of social cohesion, the consolidation of national unity and the support and equity of the poor and vulnerable groups, which included the construction of barrages, schools, the establishment of health centers, provision of safe drinking water to a large number of villages, and helping families to improve their living conditions, and assuming the responsibility of health insurance for 15 per cent of the population, as a first stage before its generalization.

Regarding the regional and international situation, the Minister stressed to the audience the right of the Palestinian people to dignity and sovereignty within the framework of an independent State with East Jerusalem as its capital.
