Participation in a seminar on the role of technology in supporting democracy

On March 30, 2023, on the sidelines of the Democratic Summit organized by the United States, H.E. Mrs. Cissa Cheikh Boide, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to the United States of America, participated in a seminar on strengthening the role of technology to support democracy, chaired by the US Secretary of State, Mr. Antony Blinken, where he declared that democracies must highlight the positive and compelling vision they represent, characterized by principles and values and respect for rights to freedom and democracy in the digital age, and we must stand against The misuse of technology for oppression, control, division and deprivation, and the spread of digital authoritarianism.

Mr. Antony Blinken added it is also necessary to focus not only on today’s technologies but on shaping the ecosystem of emerging technologies in line with democratic principles and human rights, this event, hosted by the U.S. government, will also include several sessions dedicated to the following three themes:

Session I: Advancing Democracy and Internet Freedom in the Digital Age.

Second Session: Combating Technology Misuse and the Rise of Digital Authoritarianism.

Session III: Shaping emerging technologies to ensure respect for human rights and democratic principles.

We note that our country was among the countries that extended an invitation to participate in the summit this year, and it was marked by the participation of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, where he delivered a speech in which he expressed that Mauritania has made and is making great efforts to consolidate democracy, promote human rights, and consolidate the foundations of the rule of law and institutions, in a calm atmosphere of openness and consultation with all political and social actors, highlighting that in this context, our country is preparing in mid-May 2023, to organize parliamentary and local elections. We work to be fair and transparent, and to take place in an atmosphere of freedom and responsible competition.
